US to provide hundreds of millions in state support to domestic semiconductor production
The Biden administration is providing $162 million (€147.9 million) to Microchip Technology to support the domestic production of computer chips - the second funding announcement tied to a 2022 law designed to revive US semiconductor manufacturing. According to a report by consultancy firm McKinsey & Company, chips are projected to become a one trillion dollar industry by 2030. The EU passed the European Chips Act in 2023, which mobilises €43 billion of investment to increase Europe's global market share in semiconductors from 10 per cent to 20 per cent by 2030.

Samsung Places AI at Forefront as 2024 Phone Launches Kick Off
Samsung Electronics Co. announced it plans to launch its next flagship device on Jan. 17 in San Jose, California — likely to be known as the Galaxy S24 — with a livestreamed event. The teaser to the launch promises only that “Galaxy AI is coming.” In past years, Samsung and fellow mobile makers have relied on improvements in camera technology and flexible displays to stand out, but 2024 promises to be a year where added AI capabilities take center stage. More than a billion smartphones with built-in generative AI are expected to be shipped by the end of 2027, according to Counterpoint Research estimates.

Accelerated Infrastructure Simply the Next Evolution of Data Center Infrastructure
At their recent analyst day held at corporate headquarters in Santa Clara, Calif., Marvell execs made it clear that for them, “AI” didn’t just mean artificial intelligence; it also means accelerated infrastructure. AI is typically categorized either as “traditional” AI or “generative” AI. While existing data center infrastructures have proven to at least be adequate for the current needs of the former, the latter is driving fundamental shifts in data center infrastructure design to address exploding compute, memory and power requirements.
